So what makes a Reliable Electric Gate System?

Also known as an automatic gate, an electric gate system is composed of the motors (to make the gates physically move), the control panel (which is the electronic brain of the gate that controls movement and logic), the safety sensors (that prevent accidents of injuries), the radio receiver (which detects the signal from the remote control fobs), the fobs or remotes, and maybe some form of access control system (keypad, intercom, induction loop etc).

The gate motors

Electric gates can use underground motors, pillar mounted rams, hydraulic ram operators, articulated arm motors or sliding gate motors.
The type of motor used to automate the gates will be determined by several attributes of the gates: it's size, weight, whether it is open to the wind or if it is sheeted and will catch the wind, the length of the gate leaf, how the gate is mounted to the pillar and several other considerations. Honestly - experience is very important when deciding on the most appropriate type of gate motor to be used.

The safety sensors

Infra-red photo sensors are installed on almost every electric gate as the bare minimum safety feature. Or at least they should be present. Some gate automation installers are very lazy and do not fit these - but I consider them to be the absolute minimum. An infra-red photo sensor operates as a pair of sensors on the gate. One part - the transmitter is fitted to a pillar or post on one side of the gate opening and the other part - the receiver, is fitted opposite to it. An infra-red beam (which is not visible to the human eye) shines from the transmitter and is detected by the receiver.

If an obstacle, such as a car or pedestrian were to cross the path of the invisible beam, the gates would not close. Or if the gates were closing, they should immediately stop moving and reverse direction.

Safety and Security Features of Automatic Gates

Infrared Sensors for Accident Prevention

Automatic gates come equipped with infrared sensors that detect obstacles in the path of closing gates, ensuring safety by preventing accidents. These sensors act as a barrier, immediately stopping the gate from closing if an object or person is detected. This feature is especially important in residential areas where children or pets may be playing near the gate.

Anti-Climbing Measures for Unauthorized Access

To enhance security, automatic gates often include anti-climbing measures such as spikes or finials. These deterrents discourage individuals from attempting to climb over the gate, thereby preventing unauthorized access to your property. By implementing these measures, you can create a physical barrier that adds an extra layer of protection.

Security Cameras and Intercom Systems for Visual Identification and Communication

Many automatic gates are equipped with security cameras and intercom systems, allowing visual identification and communication with visitors before granting access. With high-quality security cameras installed at strategic points around the gate entrance, you can monitor who is approaching your property. Intercom systems enable clear communication between you and visitors, providing an additional level of control over who enters your premises.

Emergency Release Mechanisms for Power Failure Situations

In case of power failure or emergency situations, automatic gates are designed with emergency release mechanisms. These mechanisms allow for manual operation of the gate when needed, ensuring that you can still enter or exit your property even during unexpected circumstances. It provides peace of mind knowing that you won't be trapped inside or outside your property due to power outages.

Maintaining safety and security should always be a priority when considering automatic gates for your property. The inclusion of infrared sensors, anti-climbing measures, security cameras with intercom systems, and emergency release mechanisms ensures not only convenience but also peace of mind. By investing in high-quality automatic gates and regular maintenance, you can protect your property while enjoying the added convenience they offer.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Automatic Gates

Property Size and Layout

The size and layout of your property are crucial factors to consider when choosing automatic gates. The type of gate you select should be suitable for the dimensions and configuration of your property. For instance, if you have limited space, a sliding gate might be more appropriate as it requires less room to operate compared to a swinging gate. On the other hand, if you have a wide driveway, a double swing gate could be an ideal choice.

Material Options

When selecting automatic gates, you need to consider the material options available. Different materials offer varying levels of aesthetic appeal and durability. Steel gates are known for their strength and longevity, making them an excellent choice for high-security applications. Aluminum gates are lightweight yet sturdy, providing a balance between aesthetics and durability. Wood gates offer a classic look but may require more maintenance compared to metal options.

Gate Automation and Access Control for Residential Use

Keypad Entry

Another popular feature of residential gate automation is keypad entry. With this system, residents can input unique codes on a keypad to operate the gate. Each resident can have their own code, allowing for personalized access control. This eliminates the need for physical keys and provides convenience while maintaining security.

Remote Controls

Remote controls are a convenient option for operating automatic gates from inside vehicles. By simply pressing a button on the remote control, residents can open or close their gates without having to leave their cars. This feature is especially beneficial during bad weather or when carrying heavy items.

Smartphone Apps

Advancements in technology have introduced smartphone apps that offer remote access control to residential gates. Through these apps, residents can operate their gates using Wi-Fi or cellular networks from anywhere with an internet connection. This allows homeowners to grant access to visitors even when they are not physically present at home.

Electric Gate Openers: Kits and Options

DIY Electric Gate Opener Kits

For those looking to automate their gates, there are convenient DIY electric gate opener kits available. These kits are designed for self-installation projects, allowing homeowners to save on installation costs and have control over the process. With easy-to-follow instructions, even those with limited technical knowledge can successfully install these kits.

Solar-Powered Options

In addition to traditional electric gate openers, there are also solar-powered options available. These innovative gate openers harness the power of the sun, reducing energy consumption and providing off-grid functionality. By using renewable energy sources, solar-powered gate openers contribute to a greener environment while ensuring reliable operation.

Battery Backup for Uninterrupted Operation

One important feature to consider when choosing an electric gate opener is a battery backup system. This ensures uninterrupted operation during power outages or electrical failures. With a battery backup in place, you can rest assured that your gate will continue to function smoothly even when faced with unexpected power disruptions.

Adjustable Speed Settings for Customisation

Another advantage of modern electric gate openers is the ability to adjust speed settings according to user preferences. Whether you prefer a slower or faster opening and closing speed, these adjustable settings allow customization based on individual needs and requirements.

Gate Automation and Access Control for Residential Use: Control Panels and Boards

Gate automation systems for residential use rely on centralized control panels and circuit boards to manage various aspects of the gate operation. These components play a crucial role in ensuring the smooth functioning of automatic gates.

Central Control Panels

Central control panels serve as the command center for gate automation systems. They allow homeowners to conveniently control and monitor their gates from a single location. These panels offer a range of features, including:

  • Customization: Programming options enable users to customize gate operating modes and timings according to their specific requirements.

  • Diagnostic Capabilities: Centralized control panels provide diagnostic features that offer troubleshooting information, helping homeowners identify and resolve any issues with the gate system.

  • Integration: These panels can integrate with other security systems, such as intercoms or CCTV cameras, providing enhanced access control and surveillance capabilities.

Circuit Boards

Circuit boards are essential components within gate automation systems. They regulate various functions of the gates, including motor control and sensor integration. Key aspects of circuit boards include:

  • Motor Control: Circuit boards ensure precise motor control, allowing gates to open and close smoothly without any glitches.

  • Sensor Integration: These boards facilitate the integration of sensors, such as photo cells or safety edges, which enhance the safety features of automatic gates by detecting obstacles or obstructions.
